Cameron Elementary School received a donation of 300 new bicycle helmets thanks to the generosity and collaboration among several local organizations, businesses, and community members committed to the students’ safety.
The initiative began when Officer Shawn Allman visited the school’s pre-kindergarten classrooms to teach students about bicycle safety. During the visit, Officer Allman expressed his desire to ensure that every pre-k student had access to a properly fitted helmet.

Around the same time, community member Mike Simms contacted the school to inquire about launching a broader helmet initiative -one aimed at providing helmets for every student at Cameron Elementary School. Mr. Simms shared that he hoped to pursue this effort in memory of his sister, Catherine Simms, who tragically lost her life in a bicycle accident as a child. When Mr. Simms learned of Officer Allman’s existing vision for the pre-k students, the two quickly joined forces.
What began as two aligned ideas grew into a school-wide safety initiative that united not only the City of Cameron but the Marshall County community. Through the combined efforts of Mike Simms, Officer Allman, and a network of generous donors, Cameron Elementary was able to purchase 300 helmets, which is enough for every student in the school.

Donors who made this initiative possible include: Cameron Volunteer Fire Department, T.C. Energy, Level Tech, Cameron Sons of the American Legion, Cameron Auxiliary, Marshall County Sheriff’s Department Officer Shawn Allman, Joe Canestraro, Arthur Oakland, Lisa Zukoff, and several anonymous contributors This donation ensures every child has the equipment they need to stay safe while riding their bikes.
The students, faculty, and staff are deeply grateful for the compassion, generosity, and partnership shown by Simms, Officer Allman, and the many organizations and individuals who contributed.

Cameron Elementary School will distribute the helmets to students and will continue to educate students on bicycle safety and responsible riding practices.
